If your home runs on oil or LPG heating, there has never been a better time to consider switching to a heat pump. The government has just announced a major increase to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant, taking the total available to eligible households up to £9,000. Here at Humphrey & Crockett, we want to make sure our customers across Hampshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire understand exactly what this means for them and how to take advantage of it.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant programme that provides upfront funding to help homeowners and small businesses replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives such as air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. It is available to properties in England and Wales and applications are managed by Ofgem.
The scheme is designed to make the cost of switching to a heat pump more manageable and with the new £9,000 uplift, that financial incentive has become significantly more attractive.
The New £9,000 BUS Grant: What Has Changed?
On 21 April 2026, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced an increase to the BUS grant specifically for properties currently heated by oil or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The total grant value rises to £9,000 up from the previous level making it one of the most generous government incentives available for home heating upgrades.
This increase was driven directly by rising oil prices linked to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, which has hit off-gas-grid households particularly those in rural areas hardest. The government’s response is clear: help those most exposed to volatile fossil fuel prices make the switch to cleaner, more stable alternatives.
Why Choose Humphrey & Crockett for Your Heat Pump Installation?
Established in Andover in 2010, we have been helping homeowners across Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Berkshire with their heating needs for over 16 years. We are passionate about renewable energy and take real pride in finding the right solution for each individual home, no one-size-fits-all approach.
Critically, when it comes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, your installer must be MCS certified in order for you to access the grant. We are fully MCS accredited and our in-house MCS Co-ordinator Carl Wheatley manages the certification process on your behalf, so you don’t have to navigate the paperwork alone.
We serve Andover, Southampton, Salisbury, Winchester and most of Hampshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire. Our showroom in Andover is open Monday to Friday and Saturday by appointment where you can speak to our team about what a heat pump installation would involve for your home.
Is My Property Eligible for the £9,000 Heat Pump Grant?
You are likely eligible if:
- Your property is in England or Wales
- You currently heat your home with oil or LPG
- You are looking to install an air-to-water heat pump or ground source heat pump
A heating assessment is the essential first step. We carry out full MCS heating, fuel use and eco energy assessments.
What About Gas and Electric Homes? Grant Funding Is Still Available
Whilst the headline £9,000 uplift applies specifically to oil and LPG properties, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme still offers meaningful support for other households. If you are on mains gas or inefficient direct electric heating, a grant of £7,500 remains available to help fund a heat pump installation. Biomass boiler installations also continue to attract £5,000 in grant funding. Both the £7,500 and £5,000 grant levels are confirmed until 2030 and enjoy cross-party political support, giving homeowners real confidence that this funding will be in place for years to come.
Our BUS Grant Success Rate: Above the National Average
The national average BUS grant success rate sits at just over 70%. At Humphrey & Crockett, we consistently achieve a significantly higher rate than that. This is not by chance. Our approach is built around three principles: assessing each property’s efficiency needs thoroughly, designing a system that is genuinely right for that home, and always accounting for the individual circumstances and priorities of the homeowner. Getting a grant application approved is one thing; making sure the heat pump is the right fit for your property and your lifestyle is what we focus on.
